How to identify a macbook via settings

The easiest way to identify a MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini, or any other device on a Mac OS is to look for the model information on the device itself. To do this, turn on the computer, log in under a user account, and then in the upper right corner, click on the apple icon. In the drop-down menu, select “About this Mac.”

You are going to see a window that will allow you to see the model of the device and its serial number.

If for some reason you couldn’t find information about a Mac model through settings, you can use other methods described below.

How to identify a macbook via system information

The device model description contains much less details in the “System Information” section in Mac OS. Here you can only find out exactly the name of the model, but you will not be able to find out the year when it was released. Nevertheless, given that this section contains a lot of other useful information about the device, it is worth considering this option.

Click on the apple icon in the upper left corner, then hold down the Option (Alt) key on the keyboard, and the top item of the drop-down menu will change to the “System Information”. Click it.

Now you need to select the “Hardware” item in the left menu, and in the right part of the window, in the “Model Identifier” line, you will see information about the model of your MacBook.

Please note: If you need more detailed specifications, you can find them by switching between sections in the system information.

How to identify a macbook by its serial number

Apple offers computer owners to find out some information about their devices by serial number directly on the company’s website. Above we have already told you how to find the serial number of a Mac. There are several methods to find more information about a Mac Book on the Apple website using your device’s serial number:

  • Go to the warranty section. Here you should enter the serial number of your computer, and almost immediately you will get an access to the rest of the details: what kind of device it is and whether it still has the right for maintenance or technical support.

  • Go to the section for technical specifications. Here in the “Search for technical specifications” line you need to enter the device’s serial number and click “Search”. After that you are going to see more information about the computer that owns this serial number. By clicking on it, you can get detailed information about the device.

Of course in order to determine the MacBook model by serial number, you will need the Internet connection, whereas for the options described at the beginning of this article, it is not necessary.

How to identify a macbook by its vendor code

You can also get a lot of information about the MacBook by its vendor code that is specified on the box. Enter the vendor code into any search engine, and then go to the Apple website, where information about this model will be described fully.

Please note: Vendor code consists of two parts. For example: MC769RS / A. The letters RS (and RR) before the “/” are indicating the country where this device was sold.
