How to turn on and set up the night shift on Mac and iPhone

Apple is recently paying a great attention to the health of its users. Not so long ago, the Night Shift function appeared in Mac OS and iOS. This function allows reducing the load on the user’s eyesight thanks to more “warm” colors. The Night Shift function changes the color spectrum of the screen. It can be activated manually or you may just configure your PC or your smartphone to turn on the Night Shift at a certain time.

Important note: if you are editing photos or videos on your computer or your phone, you should not do this with the Night Shift activated, because it greatly distorts real colors.

How to enable night shift on a Mac

For the Night Shift to be activated on any Apple computer, it must be running Mac OS with a version not earlier than 10.12.4. To activate Night Shift, click on three bars in the upper right corner of the screen. You are going to see a column with widgets.

Swipe touchpad with two fingers as when scrolling through the page in the browser so that the displayed information slides down. Above there will be two new items that can be activated and deactivated with a switch. Night Shift is one of them. Turn it on.

After that, Night Shift will be activated on your Mac immediately. You can turn it off at any time in the same menu.

How to set up night shift on a Mac

Users can set their Mac computers to automatically turn Night Shift on, and also control the changes in theme colors.

Please note

The warmer are the colors the user is seeing before going to bed, the easier it is for him to fall asleep.

To configure the Night Shift feature on a computer running Mac OS, go to settings. To do this, in the upper left corner, click on the apple icon and select “System Preferences” in the drop-down menu.

Options for setting Night Shift are located in the Displays section, go there.

From above, switch to the Night Shift subsection.

Here you can set up the Night Shift. The user can turn it off completely in the “Schedule” item, or set the time when this mode will be activated – from sunset to sunrise, or according to a predetermined schedule. You can use the “Color Temperature” slider to specify how warm the colors will be after the Night Shift function is turned on.

Please note
Choosing “Sunset to Sunrise” setting in the Night Shift schedule, you will need to give the computer access to your location so that it can understand at what time the sun rises and sets specifically in your region, and based on this information, coordinate the Night Shift operation.

How to enable and configure night shift on an iPhone

Night Shift is also present on Apple’s mobile devices, such as the iPhone and iPad. To activate and set it you need to go to the settings and then to the “Display & Brightness” section.

Here you can see that Night Shift is a separate section. Go to there to configure this option.

Depending on how you want to use the option, enable this mode in manual mode or schedule it to be turned on at a certain time. Just like in the Night Shift settings on a Mac, you can set the color temperature here too.

Night Shift is quite a useful option, especially if you use your phone or tablet when the lights are off. Even with minimal brightness, “cold” colors strongly affect one’s vision, requiring eyes to be more concentrated, which can later lead to various sleeping disorders. Warmer colors are doing far less harm in this case.
