Laptop battery is not charging: what should i do

People choose laptops because of their portability and their ability to work for some time without a need to connect to any power source. In stand-alone operation, laptop is consuming energy that is stored in the battery. Over time, this battery loses its capacity, but it should occur no sooner than a few hundred charge / discharge cycles. In order for the battery to last as long as possible, it is necessary to calibrate it from time to time.

However, in addition to the problem with the fast discharge of the laptop battery, any user may also experience a malfunction when the battery refuses to charge or is not charging fully. These problems can arise for a number of reasons, and below we will tell you what has to be done in such situations.

Table of contents:
1. What has to be done if the laptop battery does not charge
- Resetting battery settings in BIOS
- Removing unnecessary utilities
- Battery check and power supply check
2. What has to be done in case laptop battery is not charging completely
- Quick battery discharge because of the background applications
- Battery deterioration

What has to be done if the laptop battery does not charge

It is common for a laptop battery to be charged for some time without any problems, and at some point it refuses to charge at all. This problem can be associated with both software and hardware failures. Let’s see the most basic solutions one can turn to in this case.

Resetting battery settings in BIOS

The first thing you need to try, if the laptop battery has stopped charging, is reset its settings in BIOS. This has to be done as follows:

  1. Completely remove the power supply wire from your laptop;
  2. Remove the battery from the laptop. Most often, you need to turn the laptop over and press the button to remove the battery;
  3. After this, open your laptop and hold down the power button for a minute;
  4. Insert the wire that comes from the power supply unit into the laptop, but do not install the battery back in its place;
  5. Turn your computer on and proceed to BIOS. Let us remind you that to get to BIOS, you must press the Del, F12 or F2 key (depends on a laptop model) when turning on your computer. In some cases to get to BIOS you may need more specific key combinations;
  6. Reset BIOS settings to their default values. When settings are reset, save them and exit BIOS;
  7. After this, you have to turn your laptop off. To do this, hold down the power button for a few seconds until the device is turned off completely;
  8. Now you need to install the laptop battery back in its place and plug in the power supply connector, after all this is done you can turn your computer back on.

The above sequence of actions in most cases helps to correct a situation when the laptop battery does not charge, if the problem is caused by a software failure.

Removing unnecessary utilities

Most laptop manufacturers deliver a set of utilities together with the operating system. And of course among those utilities there may be some programs for setting up and diagnosing the battery. In such applications, there is often a battery saving mode that can prevent it from charging or slow down the process. Since there are so many applications like that, it is difficult to give a single piece of advice on how to set them up so that they do not interfere with the battery charge. The simplest solution to this problem is to remove such an application at all.

Please note
Windows operating system is always selecting the optimal mode of the battery operation. Such applications produced by some third-party developers may conflict with the system, so we do not recommend to install or to use them.

Battery check and power supply check

Naturally, you cannot exclude hardware malfunctions. And it is actually quite often because of them the laptop battery cannot be charged. This can be both – a failure of the battery itself or some problems with the power supply. In some cases, the power supply does not have enough power to operate the working laptop and charge the battery at the same time.

What has to be done in case laptop battery is not charging completely

Incomplete charging is another common laptop battery malfunction. If the battery is not getting charged completely it may also be a sign of some hardware problems or some incorrect software setting.

Quick battery discharge because of the background applications

Fast energy consumption by some background applications running in the system sometimes may be a reason for a quick discharge of a laptop battery. To prevent such a fast battery discharge, it is necessary to leave in the list of programs only the most relevant background applications that consume only minimal resources.

Start Task Manager and check in the list of processes. Find out which ones are loading your computer recourses and especially the CPU most heavily. Minimize the number of such applications by removing unnecessary programs or prohibiting them from starting when your computer starts.
Battery deterioration

The more actively you are using your laptop battery the lower becomes its capacity. And this certainly leads to its faster discharge and in some cases to the installation of a charge limit. In order to check the condition of your laptop battery, you can try using the Battery Care application. Download it, install and run.

This program will give you all necessary information about the battery. And here you will need to pay special attention to the indicators of the declared capacity, the maximum charge (the current charge of your battery) and the battery deterioration level. The higher is the battery deterioration level, the faster your battery will discharge, and the more likely it will not be getting charged to the end. It is possible to slow down battery deterioration if you calibrate it battery every 2-3 months.
