How to stop programs from starting automatically in windows 10

Microsoft is working constantly to improve Windows 10, the company is regularly releasing large updates, and every update will have some new features added to it. After the update number 1709 was released, all users discovered a new feature – programs and applications are booting automatically as soon as you start your computer. This basically means that if at the time when you turned off your computer you had a list of certain programs opened, they will be automatically launched after your computer was turned off and on again. This does not necessarily work for all existing applications, but for most of them it does. If you do not need this functional feature, you can turn it off, but it’s not as easy as we wish it to be. In this article we are going to tell you how to disable the automatic application restart when Windows 10 is booting.

Please note
It is worth mentioning that a similar functionality for restarting applications on reboots has long been present in Mac OS, which is the main competitor of Windows.

How automatic application rebooting works in windows 10

Before you figure out how to disable this or another function, you need to understand how it works. In the operating system there is no separate section of settings where it would be possible to set the necessary parameters for the automatic reboot function.

If we will dig a little bit deeper into the mechanics of this process, we will notice that after the update 1709 was released, there appeared the stutdown.exe / sg / hybrid / t 0 command and it is used when the computer is turned off. And here it is good to note that before this update the / sg parameter was absent. Obviously, this exactly parameter is responsible for restarting applications.

Interestingly, the applications are being automatically reloaded even before the user logs in his Windows 10 profile. This means that while the user is on the login screen and he did not even entered his password yet, some certain applications are already restarted in the background so that the user can access them right away after he enters the password.

Please note
If, for example, when you restarted your computer, you left a window with video in the browser, it will automatically start in the background and start playing at the Windows 10 profile selection screen.

Not all users did like the new functionality, but Microsoft does not offer any settings to disable it. Nevertheless, it is possible to do this. There are even several ways to prevent programs from starting automatically when you start Windows. This is what you can do:

  1. Close all applications before shutting down or restarting your computer. This method is the most obvious and reliable; this is how Microsoft recommends acting in case someone does not like the new feature;
  2. At the end of the computer operation, when the “Shutdown” button is pressed, you must hold the Shift key. In this case, your computer will shut down with all applications closed;
  3. To turn off your computer use your own shortcut that will have no command to save applications on reboot. To create such a shortcut, it is enough to do the following:
    1. Right-click at the free space on the desktop and select “New” – “Shortcut”;
    2. After that, in the line “Type the location of the item”, insert the following command and click “Next”:
      %WINDIR%\system32\shutdown.exe /s /hybrid /t 0

    3. After that, specify a name for the shortcut, it can be selected arbitrarily. Click “Finish”.

That is it. You can now use this shortcut to turn off your computer. Using it, you can be sure that the applications that were opened during the shutdown of your computer will not load automatically at the start.

Please note
The created shortcut can be made even more convenient. We recommend that you right-click on it, select “Properties” and then set the corresponding icon so that it will stand out from the other shortcuts. In addition, this shortcut can be placed directly in the Start menu, so that it would be more convenient to interact with it.

How to disable automatic application rebooting in windows 10 before logging into the system

As we have already mentioned above, applications that have not been closed will start to boot at the time of selecting the Windows 10 profile, which can lead to various problems. If you do not need to disable the functionality of loading applications automatically on the start, but you still want all programs not to run until the profile is activated, you can configure it:

  1. Go to the Windows 10 settings, select the “Accounts” section and the “Sign-in options” subsection;
  2. Next step – from the list of options you need to select the option “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart.” By default, this option is enabled, turn it off.

After that, all applications will start to load only when the user profile is activated, that is, after entering the password.
